Background and Banner Affiliation
Baha belonged to the Guwalgiya clan of the Bordered Yellow Banner. He was Weiqi's fourth son and a younger brother of Oboi, a powerful early Qing political figure. Volume 1 of the Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners records Baha's service as a first-class imperial bodyguard. In the second Shunzhi year, recognition of his service under Nurhaci and Hong Taiji brought him the hereditary rank qidu wei. Subsequent evaluations, military service and imperial favors increased his distinctions as far as first-class baron. He also served as a senior inner-court official.
Career, Campaigns, and Offices
The dynastic temple names Taizu and Taizong in this context refer respectively to Nurhaci and Hong Taiji. A first-class imperial bodyguard was an active rank in the emperor's personal service hierarchy. Qidu wei, qingche duwei and hereditary baron were different grades of service reward and succession, not successive levels in the bodyguard establishment.
Hereditary Honors and Source Limits
Baha participated in campaigns in Shaanxi, Huguang and Sichuan. Nevertheless, the disgrace and punishment of Oboi affected Baha as well: his noble rank was withdrawn and did not simply pass intact to his descendants. The genealogy names ten sons, including Su'erda, who later became a senior commander of the imperial guard. That was the son's position, not a separate title held by Baha himself. The precise proceedings surrounding Baha's dismissal require corroboration in contemporary edicts. Source: Eight Banners Manchu Clan Genealogy, vol. 1.
