Background and Banner Affiliation
Eidu was an early Manchu commander of the Niohuru lineage, historically associated with the Changbai Mountain region. He joined Nurhaci at an early stage and participated in numerous campaigns, becoming one of the five principal founding ministers. With the development of the banner system he was registered in the Bordered Yellow Banner. He held senior military responsibilities, including left-wing command, and his household came to control a hereditary niru.
Career, Campaigns, and Offices
During the Battle of Sarhū in 1619 (Tianming 4), Eidu took part in operations against the Ming army. The historical account records Hong Taiji urging swift protection of the force constructing fortifications at Jiefan; Eidu supported that judgment and took part in subsequent fighting near Sarhū and Shangjian Cliff. The niru was an administrative-military company, while hereditary control of its command was a particular family entitlement, not a title held equally by every person on its rolls.
Hereditary Honors and Source Limits
Eidu died in 1621, aged sixty, shortly after the capture of Liaoyang. He received the posthumous title Duke Hongyi in 1627 and was subsequently honoured with a place in the imperial ancestral temple. His sons, including Turge and Ebilun, followed distinct careers, and hereditary titles developed differently in different branches of the family. Later designations and adjustments of the Kangxi and Qianlong periods must not be attributed to Eidu as events he personally experienced.
