Family and early service

Gestai was a commander of the Guwalgiya clan, affiliated with the Bordered White Manchu Banner. His family had earlier lived in the Warka region, and his father Hele entered Nurhaci's service. Gestai began as a guard to Prince Rui and fought in campaigns connected with Zhoushan and Yunnan. He later held the posts of vanguard colonel and supervisor of a banner company. Guard service to a princely household, membership in the Vanguard Battalion's officer corps, and management of a zuoling unit were separate appointments.

Battle against Galdan

In 1690 Gestai accompanied Prince Fuquan's forces against Galdan, taking part in the Battle of Ulan Butung alongside Tong Guogang. After Tong was killed, Gestai continued to fight within the enemy's formation and died along with officers including Maitu. The official biography describes observers recognizing Gestai's successive charges by his white-nosed horse. This is a battlefield detail transmitted in the historical narrative; it does not supply evidence for later supernatural embellishments.

Posthumous treatment

Gestai was granted official sacrifices and burial with arrangements corresponding to those of a deputy banner commander, together with an inheritable distinction traditionally termed baitalabure hafan. Receiving funeral treatment by analogy with a higher rank did not make him a deputy banner commander while alive. Similarly, a hereditary award was not the same thing as his substantive appointment as vanguard colonel. The father's military actions during the first Qing campaigns into China proper should be recorded under Hele's name, not Gestai's.
