Guard duties and status
Hujun were soldiers serving within the Eight Banners' Imperial Guard Camp (Hujunying), performing guard duty at palace entrances, escorting the emperor, and undertaking related military exercises. The expression was not a collective name for every Eight Banners soldier. It must also be distinguished from the command ranks of guard commander, guard-company officer, and other camp officials. A record stating that a person 'served as a hujun' describes a service category, not necessarily appointment to a guard officer's command.
Institutional functions
According to the Draft History of Qing, the Guard Camp recruited selected troops from the Manchu and Mongol banner divisions and operated under its designated commanders. Guards protected entrances and court ceremonies, served in rotating palace watches, accompanied imperial journeys, and participated in formal troop reviews. These general responsibilities do not prove that any particular guard took part in a named battle or received an individual reward.
The Guard Camp had a different function from the Vanguard Camp (Qianfengying) and the Mounted Banner Camp (Xiaoqiying). The former had reconnaissance and advance-escort duties, while the latter was also tied to company organization and banner service administration. Identifying someone as a hujun does not alone establish his exact company registration, family background, or subsequent promotion. Those details must be checked in genealogies and appointment records.
