The Qingwen Qimeng, fully titled Man-Han Zi Qingwen Qimeng (Introduction to the Manchu Language in Manchu and Chinese), was a bilingual Manchu textbook compiled by Wuge during the Qing period. The Palace Museum records an edition printed by Hongwenge in 1730, the eighth Yongzheng year, in four volumes and four physical booklets. The work joins writing, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar into a structured introductory curriculum, making it an important witness to how Manchu was taught in the eighteenth century.
Contents of the four volumes
The first volume addresses sounds and writing, including the traditional Twelve Syllabic Heads, methods for analyzing pronunciation, variations of letter forms, and the sequence of pen strokes. The second centers on parallel Manchu–Chinese expressions and dialogues, with examples of usage in everyday exchanges. The third examines grammatical particles and other so-called function words, including aspects of verbal formation, connectors, and postpositions. The fourth distinguishes words and characters that resemble one another in writing, sound, or meaning. Together these sections provide learners with more than an alphabet chart: they introduce the structural conventions of the written language.
Research value and caution
The book is evidence both of Qing instruction and of how contemporary teachers explained bilingual language usage. Its printed explanations should be distinguished from modern linguistic analyses, which may use different grammatical terms. Dialogues in a normative textbook do not establish how every Manchu-speaking community actually spoke; they represent selected and standardized examples for learners.
