The Tangzi as a place of worship
The *Tangzi* sacrifices were rites conducted by the Qing Manchu imperial house at a designated ritual site. They incorporated elements of earlier Manchu clan worship while becoming part of the formal ritual order of the Qing state. The *Tangzi* should not be confused with the Palace of Earthly Tranquility (*Kunninggong*) inside the Forbidden City, nor should its ceremonies be equated with every form of Qing worship of Heaven.
According to the Palace Museum, Tangzi-associated clan practices predated Nurhaci's establishment of a state. Tangzi sites were maintained in Hetu Ala, Liaoyang, and Shenyang before the Qing court established its Beijing complex. The Beijing site included halls and pavilions, stone bases for ritual poles, and distinct spaces for ceremonies.
Different rites and political uses
The Palace Museum identifies observances including New Year's worship of Heaven at the circular hall, monthly sacrifices, major pole-erection ceremonies, rites at a designated pavilion, Buddha-bathing, sacrifices for horses, and offerings made before military campaigns or after victorious returns. Their calendar, personnel, implements, and ritual sequences differed. Tangzi worship was therefore not merely private devotion; it also intersected with the dynasty's military and political activity. The court's institutionalized rites must not be treated as a uniform template for regional or household Manchu practices, which varied by locality, lineage, and historical period.
