Clan and bestowed surname Namutai was the third younger brother of Yangguli, originally belonging to the Šumuru clan of the Plain Yellow Banner. Volume 6 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of the Eight Banner Manchu Clans* records that Nurhaci bestowed the surname Gioro upon him. The family background and later surname grant are both historical facts; the individual grant should not be extended to all Šumuru relatives or used to erase the earlier clan identification.

Office and campaigns He served as minister of the Board of War and, after a three-year performance assessment, received third-class *qingche duwei*. He later became senior Banner *dutong* and participated in campaigns involving Dalinghe and Wangjiazhuang near Datong and the submission of Ejei. His military merit brought promotion to third-class baron. The ministry was responsible for military administration, the *dutong* directed Banner affairs, and the merit dignities belonged to a separate hereditary system. A reward for an administrative assessment should not be misdescribed as a battlefield promotion.

Sons and separate merit lines Namutai's second son Alami inherited the third-class barony, later transmitted through Qilanbu and Jishou. His eldest son Bayartu served as *zuoling* and died in the Pi Island campaign, receiving posthumous third-class *qingche duwei* in a distinct line. The third son Ahalian campaigned as *hujun canling* and independently earned *qiduwei*. The sons' merit awards must not be combined into a single promotion of Namutai himself. The date of the surname grant and certain intermediate successions need checking against original sources.
