Overview

Gakzhuli was a member of the Xilin Gioro clan, Bordered Blue Banner, whose family had lived in Wangqin for generations. The official Qing dynasty genealogy, *The General Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, Volume 17, lists him in a group where the year of his submission is unknown. It records that his grandson, Alin, served as a captain in the Imperial Guard; Naqin served as a captain in the Imperial Guard; his great-grandson, Anpin, served as a vanguard captain; and Anchang served as a cavalry captain. These official positions reflect different organizational structures within the Eight Banners army: the Imperial Guard was responsible for connecting with the palace guards; the Imperial Guard was responsible for guarding the emperor and accompanying the emperor; the Vanguard Battalion was used for frontline surveillance and campaigns; and the Cavalry Battalion was an important cavalry unit of the Eight Banners. These four types of "scholar" positions were attached to different battalion systems, and it is inappropriate to conflate them as a single type of officer. Their rank should also be determined based on the institution they belonged to and the years of service. The original genealogy did not provide a detailed list, so the uniform rank of all later units cannot be applied. Gakzhuli's own official position and military achievements are not mentioned in this entry; the military positions of his descendants can only be described in the family history. "Current" refers to the historical status at the time of genealogy compilation, while "former" only indicates that they once held office and cannot be used to determine the reason for leaving office. The direct paternal lineage of Wang Qindi and several of his descendants still needs to be verified separately.
