Overview
Zhurhana was a member of the Namudulu clan of the Bordered Red Banner in the early Qing Dynasty. His ancestral home was in Suifen, and he submitted to the Qing Dynasty at the beginning of the dynasty. The official Qing Dynasty genealogy, *the Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, Volume 21, records that he served as a guerrilla commander (You Ji). His son, Wuerkana, served as a military commander (guard-unit captain), his grandson, Zhongxibu, as a deputy commander (assistant banner commandant), and his great-great-grandson, Yonglai, as a third-class guard (San Deng Hu Wei). Guerrilla commander (You Ji) was a traditional military title, and military and hereditary titles evolved in the early Qing Dynasty. When interpreting Zhurhana's name, the original title should be retained, and his rank and unit should not be determined solely based on the later Green Standard Army guerrilla system. The military commander (guard-unit captain) belonged to the command and management level of the military battalion; the deputy commander (assistant banner commandant) appeared in the Eight Banners garrison military and political system, responsible for his subordinates. The specific duties of both must be identified in conjunction with the battalion system and garrison location. Guards were usually officials under princes and dukes; a third-class guard (San Deng Hu Wei) was not the same as a third-class imperial guard (San Deng Shi Wei) in the emperor's personal guard system. This entry retains four clues about the ancestor's and descendants' military positions, but does not list the years of service or garrison locations. What can be explained is that this family entered the early military, guard, garrison, and government guard systems in different generations, but these four positions cannot be combined into the official positions held by Zhurhana.
