Overview
Qi Pushne was a member of the Zakuta clan of the Plain Blue Banner. Volume 36 of the official Qing dynasty clan genealogy, *The Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, records that he lived in the Zakuta area for generations and submitted to the Qing dynasty at its beginning. The character "Qi" in his name is retained according to his mother's surname, "Ku". "Zakuta" appears in both the clan name and the ancestral home name; these should be interpreted separately according to the original text, and one cannot infer the etymology of the Manchu word or the formation date of the surname based on the same character alone.
His grandson, Gantai, was a fifth-rank official, as was his great-grandson, Zaobao. Yihana served as an Assistant Minister, Sudali as a Third-Class Guard, Waituku as an Infantry Commander, and Galin as a Clerk. The fifth-rank official designation is a rank description and cannot be used to create a substantive position. The Assistant Minister was an administrative official, while the Guard and Infantry Commander belonged to different military service systems. The Manchu title for Clerk was bithesi, responsible for handling documents and related written affairs.
Great-grandson Wohede served as a military commander and died in battle during the campaign against the Dzungars. He was posthumously awarded the title of Yunqiwei, which was inherited by his son Mingzhu. Military commander was a substantive position, while Yunqiwei was a hereditary title; Mingzhu's succession to the latter did not automatically make him a military commander. The text distinguishes generations by grandson, great-grandson, and great-great-grandson. The location of Zakuta, the complete official title of a fifth-rank official, the original inscribed characters of the name, and Wohede's expected post are verified.
