Overview

Yitakan was a member of the Bayara clan of the Plain Blue Banner. Volume 38 of the official Qing dynasty genealogy, *The Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, lists him in the appendix regarding his ancestral home in Hurha and his submission to the Qing dynasty at the beginning of the dynasty. The Plain Blue Banner was one of the Eight Banners, Bayara was the family name, and Hurha was the name of their historical ancestral home; these details indicate their origin and organizational affiliation, but do not directly indicate their military rank.

The original genealogy records that his great-grandson, Sarshan, served as a military officer, and his great-great-grandson, Zhongdeng, served as a lieutenant. A military officer was part of the military guard system, responsible for personnel and military affairs; a lieutenant was both the name of a basic-level unit within the banner and could refer to the official in charge of that unit. These two positions belong to different levels and systems, and it is inappropriate to directly state that Zhongdeng's position as lieutenant was a direct succession to Sarshan's position as a military officer.

In the Qing dynasty, the appointment of substantive official positions and the inheritance of hereditary positions were different systems; the mere existence of two generations of military rank records does not constitute proof of automatic father-son succession. The Yitakan section appears as the starting point of the lineage; the official positions of descendants can only serve as information about the family's future, and one's birth year cannot be deduced from the official positions held by descendants. The specific location of Hurha, the complete kinship between Sarshan and Zhongdeng, their affiliated units, and their expected appointments are verified in the original printed source and archives.
