Overview
The Niuyan clan is a Manchu surname listed in Volume 51 of the officially compiled *Comprehensive Genealogy of Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, with its ancestral home recorded as Yehe. The main figure of this clan, Fukatu, belonged to the Bordered Blue Banner and submitted to the Qing dynasty at the beginning of the dynasty, receiving a position equivalent to half a zuoling (a military unit). Here, zuoling primarily refers to the basic organizational unit of the Eight Banners, managing banner soldiers and also linked to military mobilization; "half a zuoling" is organizational information and should not be interpreted as an official holding only a partial position.
Fukatu's eldest son, Wu Dana, served as a *hujun canling* (an officer of the banner guard units). He was the third to scale the city walls during the attack on Baodi and later died in battle at Jizhou. He was posthumously awarded the title of Qiduwei (a hereditary merit rank), a hereditary title inherited by his brother's son, Hushitun. Hujun Canling was a military officer commanding the Imperial Guard, while Qiduwei was a hereditary title awarded for merit, illustrating the difference between his pre-death appointment and posthumous honors.
Other notable figures listed under this surname include Zhuntai, Saibihan, Daiyinbulu, and Mandubu of the Bordered Blue Banner, all grouped among people of Yehe who submitted to the Qing in its early years. Daiyinbulu is explicitly identified as a member of the Fukatu clan. The genealogy records include members of the Ren Mingzan and Xiaoqixiao ranks, as well as those whose official titles are only preserved; these do not constitute a directly coherent complete genealogy. The kinship chains, the dates of establishment of the semi-military units, and the specific locations of residence in Yehe remain to be verified.
