Overview
Chang Shu, whose biography appears in Volume 52 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners* under the entry for the Tomo clan, belonged to the Bordered Blue Banner and resided in Tashan Fort. The year of his submission is unknown. He himself participated in military operations in Yunnan as an acting commander, fighting at Shimenkan, Huangcaoba, and the outskirts of Yunnan City, and was awarded the title of Yunqiwei (a military rank). This title was later inherited by his son, Wuge.
Here, "acting" indicates a deputy position and cannot be omitted to represent a formally appointed commander. A commander was a military or banner-level officer, while Yunqiwei was a hereditary title of merit; the two belong to different institutional levels. A son inheriting a hereditary title did not automatically mean succeeding his father as acting commander.
Tomo is a Manchu clan name, and the clan's general residence included places like Yinbadan. Chang Shu's personal entry specifically mentions Tashan Fort, so this cannot be replaced by a general description. The Bordered Blue Banner was one of the Eight Banners; the banner affiliation and ancestral residence separately explain the organizational and spatial relationships. There are historical issues regarding the identification of Tashanbao's place name; its modern location needs to be verified separately. Shimenkan and Huangcaoba are the battle sites mentioned in this article, and cannot be used as Changshu's ancestral home. Existing historical materials do not provide precise dates of departure or complete birth and death records; the attribution of the battles is limited to this article.
