Overview
The Jili clan is a Manchu surname listed in Volume 53 of the officially compiled *Comprehensive Genealogy of Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*. Their ancestral home was in Changbai Mountain and Nuyi. The branch of the Doksong'e clan of the Plain Yellow Banner submitted to the Qing dynasty at the beginning of the dynasty. Their son, Wuzhuketu, served as a non-official in the campaign against Shandong. During the attack on Sishui, he was the first to scale the city walls, but died in battle because no one could follow him. He was posthumously awarded the title of Qiduwei. His son, Dangse, inherited the title and was later granted the title of Yunqiwei by imperial decree. After retiring due to illness, the title was inherited by Elehun, who also served as Assistant Commander.
The term "non-official" refers to the status of a Bannerman who did not hold an official position at the time, and cannot be used to infer that they did not bear military obligations. Qiduwei and Yunqiwei were hereditary military titles, while Assistant Commander was a military rank within the Eight Banners. Elehun inherited both a hereditary title and served as Assistant Commander, so his status should be considered separately.
The appendix of this surname also includes Wu Nuhun of the Bordered Blue Banner, whose ancestral home was Nuyi. He was also a figure who submitted to the Qing dynasty at the beginning of the dynasty. His grandson, Ajitai, served as a Guardsman, and his great-grandson, Guande, served as a Cavalry Commander. The two branches of the family have different banner affiliations and ancestral homes, and the materials listed in the genealogy are insufficient to directly connect them into a father-son lineage. Changbai Mountain is also a broad ancestral home area and cannot be replaced by a specific village. The location of Niuyi, the dates of the Sishui battle, and the blood relationship between the two branches still need further verification.
