Overview
The Yikulu clan is a Manchu surname recorded in Volume 58 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, an official compilation from the Qianlong reign. They resided in Nuoluo. Both the Yierhu and Sukuna branches belonged to the Plain Blue Banner and submitted to the Qing dynasty at its inception. Yierhu himself served as a cavalry captain, his grandson Baoshou as an infantry captain, and his younger brother Hehenuo's son, Kasana, as an assistant secretary. Sukuna's grandson, Zhucheng'e, also served as an infantry captain.
Yierhu and Hehenuo are explicitly stated as brothers in the original text. Kasana, being Hehenuo's son, should be understood as Yierhu's nephew, not Yierhu's son. Baoshou and Zhucheng'e each have their own lineage origins and cannot be merged into one person simply because they both served as infantry captains.
A cavalry captain was a low-ranking military officer in the Eight Banners, while an infantry captain was in urban garrison and patrol units. An assistant secretary was a civil official in the government. The appointments of family members reflected both civil and military roles, as well as the division of labor within the military system; therefore, it cannot be written that a family member inherited the same position. The specific relationship between Norodom, Sukuna and Ilhozhi, the institution to which the Yuanwailang belonged and his term of office still need to be verified; the ancestral residence records in the genealogy are also insufficient to independently prove the birthplace of each person.
