Overview

Kalantai is a figure recorded in Volume 62 of the *the Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*. Existing materials are insufficient to automatically merge him with other individuals of the same name in other historical records. The genealogy lists Kalantai under the heading "Bayarqi Clan," but the main subject of the entry remains Kalantai himself; the surname heading indicates the arrangement and cannot replace his full name. According to the original entry, Kalantai was a member of the Bordered Blue Banner and surrendered to the Qing dynasty at the beginning of the dynasty. The genealogy subsequently preserves the following chain of relatives and positions: his great-grandson, Heshang, is currently the Assistant Commander of Bow Craftsmen; Fobao is currently the Acting Deputy Commander of the Imperial Guard. The original entry only states "Bordered Blue Banner member," without mentioning bondservants or Han soldiers. "Surrendered to the Qing dynasty at the beginning of the dynasty" is a general time marker in the genealogy; existing materials are insufficient to determine the specific Gregorian calendar year and the process of surrender. The general description of the surname heading also states that the family's ancestral home was in Nuoluo. This place name is only preserved as a clue to the family's ancestral home; its modern corresponding location needs further investigation and cannot be directly identified as a specific location today simply because of the shared name. The title of "Bow Craftsman Assistant Commander" was an official position managing the affairs of the banner's artisans, reflecting its connection to the bow craftsman organization; however, its specific affiliation still needs to be verified through archives. The "Deputy Military Commander" assisted the Military Commander in handling the affairs of his subordinate battalions; "Deputy" is an essential component of the official title and cannot be omitted.
