Overview

Zhang Shixiao is a member of the Plain White Banner (a bannerman of the Manchu Eight Banners) listed in Volume 75 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans*. His family had long resided in Shenyang. The genealogy does not record the year of his arrival or his official position. Of particular note is the fact that the original book also records a grandson who served as the Zhejiang Military Commissioner and several descendants who worked in the inner court's treasury and clerical positions.

His son, Zhang Chengzong, was originally a student (ShengYuan). His grandson, Zhang Yunlong, served as the Zhejiang Military Commissioner. His great-grandson, Taibu, served as a cavalry officer during the compilation of the genealogy; Ming'an served as a scribe; Zhang Yuanheng and Baozhu'er both served as scribes; and Tula Zhan was a treasury official. His great-great-grandson, Marhan, served as an assistant minister (YuanWaiLang), and Baotu was a treasury official; his fourth-generation descendant, Maitu, was a treasury official, as was Baksan.

"Student" (ShengYuan) refers to a civil service education, not an administrative position; "treasury official" (KuShi) and "assistant minister" (YuanWaiLang) cannot be considered to be of the same rank. Zhang Yunlong's position in Zhejiang belongs solely to Zhang Yunlong and cannot be written as Zhang Shixiao himself "once went to Zhejiang to command troops." This entry does not specify Zhang Yunlong's place of office or term of office; to elaborate on his specific achievements, it is necessary to consult Zhejiang local archives.
