Overview

The Xu surname appears in Volume 77 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, under the section on Nikan surnames within the Manchu banners, recording Xu families from different banners. Xu Jie belonged to the Bordered Yellow Banner, a bondservant family, residing in Fushun. His grandson, Xu Zhaolin, served as an assistant minister, and his great-grandson, Xu Min, served as a military officer. Xu Decheng belonged to the Plain Yellow Banner, a bondservant family, residing in Shenyang. His grandson, Xu Yangxiu, served as a county magistrate, and Xu Yanghao was a student. His great-grandsons, Xu Ping, Xu Zi, and Xu Ren, all served as scribes.

A branch of the Xu family, under the Plain White Banner, resided in Liaoyang. His grandson, Xu Tianjue, served as an assistant minister, and his great-grandsons, Jingwen ... Langzhong and Yuanwailang were official positions in government offices. Siku managed the treasury, and Bitieshi (a transliteration of the Manchu word bithesi) was responsible for documents, copying, and translation. The original book categorized branches by surname and recorded their banner affiliations separately; this section retains this distinction. Details regarding common ancestors, terms of office, and ancestral homes of each branch still need to be verified.

The source also records a Xu-family branch within the Bordered White Banner bondservant administration.
