Overview
Jia Lu was a bondservant under the Bordered Yellow Banner during the Qing Dynasty. His family originally resided in Shenyang, but the year of their submission is unknown. The official genealogy of the Eight Banners Manchu Clans, Volume 78, under the Jia family entry, does not record his personal official position, but clearly lists his descendants as his son Jia Zishan and grandson Bash, whose duties were respectively in the military and clerical fields.
Jia Zishan once served as Acting Military Commander. "Acting" is a qualifier in official appointment, indicating that he was appointed to act in a corresponding position; it cannot be omitted and rewritten as having been officially appointed Military Commander. In the Three Banners Military Command system of the Imperial Household Department, Acting Military Commanders were selected from the military commanders of their respective banners, and were distinct from Commanders and Deputy Commanders. Specific official positions still need to be confirmed based on individual appointment records.
Bash once served as a scribe, a clerical position in the government. This cannot be interpreted as "calligrapher," nor can it be concluded that he worked as a translator before the Emperor simply because his family belonged to the bondservant class. The original text does not specify the official office or language of the Jia Lu family.
The Bordered Yellow Banner, bondservants, and subordinates constitute the organizational background of the Jia Lu family; the fact that his son held acting military positions and his grandson held civil positions does not alter the original text's description of Jia Lu's status. His process of surrender, birth and death dates, and personal duties remain unclear.
