Overview
In the terminology of Qing imperial-clan nobility, bafen (literally “eight shares” or “eight divisions”) is most consequential in the distinction between titles described as “within the eight privileges” (ru bafen) and those “outside the eight privileges” (bu ru bafen). The distinction concerned rank-associated status, ceremonial precedence, and entitlements. It cannot be reduced to the better-known princely titles of qinwang and junwang, since the imperial-clan hierarchy also included beile, beizi, dukes, and grades of general.
Historical Background
Certain titles of Duke Who Guards the State (zhenguo gong) and Duke Who Assists the State (fuguo gong) were differentiated according to whether their holders possessed bafen status. Interpretations of the institution's origins commonly relate it to earlier patterns of privilege and the sharing of authority and resources among the Eight Banners aristocracy. Subsequent Qing regulations articulated distinctions in ceremonial establishment and treatment more precisely.
Sources and Interpretation
The historical explanation of the term is not entirely uniform across sources. It would therefore be misleading to present an unverified list of exactly eight timeless rights, or to interpret the expression as an allocation of one-eighth of a tract of land. A responsible account of an individual noble must identify the exact title, the period and circumstances of conferment, and whether the title was specifically classified as ru bafen. These qualifications help distinguish ranks that appear similar when translated simply as “duke.”
