Clan and Banner Background
The Use clan appears in volume 50 of the Qianlong-sponsored Comprehensive Genealogy of Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners. Its branches originated in Yehe and several other regions. Kela of the Plain Red Banner submitted early; his great-grandson Ahazhan distinguished himself during a campaign near Datong by assaulting Desheng Fort and received the hereditary rank yunqiwei. Later imperial favour raised the distinction to third-class qingche duwei. It passed through A Hai, Garzhu, Suoji, and Manse to Bayantu.
Family Service and Distinctions
A separate Plain White Banner branch, descended from Umaka of the Changbai Mountain region, also submitted early. A fourth-generation descendant, Seleng'e, served as a cavalry-company officer and earned yunqiwei on campaign in Yunnan, a distinction subsequently inherited by Alantai. Further Use families appear under Bordered Yellow, Plain White, Bordered White, and Bordered Blue registrations and in the regions of Yehe, Jilin Ula, Warka, Fo'ala, and the Songhua River. Some were registered as booi.
Kinship, Succession, and Evidence
Company affiliation, ancestral settlement, later garrison posting, and battlefield location describe different aspects of a person's history. Offices such as xieling, cavalry-company officer, and storehouse superintendent were actual duties, while yunqiwei was an inheritable award. The genealogy's grouping under one surname does not, by itself, establish close kinship among all its branches.
