Clan and Banner Background
The Janggiya clan is described in volume 40 of the Comprehensive Genealogy of Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners as deriving its name from an earlier place-name. Families lived around Feiyalang'a, Ma'erdun Janggiya, and other places. One recorded tradition follows Mudu Bayan, who moved from the Changbai region at Emu and Sulu and whose five sons established branches associated with Feiyalang'a, Ma'erdun Janggiya, Yihan'ala, Mudan village, and Shelen village.
Family Service and Distinctions
This lineage tradition is evidence for a particular series of branches, not conclusive proof that every person bearing the surname shared one recent ancestor. The genealogy lists Plain Blue, Bordered Yellow, and Bordered White Banner registrations, along with booi identities and changes in affiliation. Surname, original residence, banner colour, and dependent-household status are separate levels of identification.
Kinship, Succession, and Evidence
The genealogy also records descendants holding vice presidencies of the Boards of Personnel and Works, guard commands, and bithesi clerkships. These appointments belong to named descendants, not automatically to the founders under whose headings they appear. Equating the surname with all bearers of the modern Chinese surname Zhang requires family-specific evidence. Variants in the place-name Emu and the precise distribution of the five lines need verification.
