Overview
Weng Jiada was a member of the Ningguta clan of the Plain Blue Banner. Volume 41 of the official Qing dynasty compilation, *the Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, records that the family had lived in Ningguta for generations, but the date of their submission is unknown. This uncertainty cannot be addressed by using records of early Qing dynasty submission from adjacent entries; the Plain Blue Banner only indicates affiliation with the Eight Banners, not necessarily an individual's official position.
His grandson, Leke, served as a zuoling (military officer), while Mandai served as an acting Protector-General in the campaigns in Yunnan, fighting at Shimenkan, Huangcaoba, and the city of Yunnan, earning the rank of Yunqiwei (a military rank). After retiring due to old age, the position was inherited by his son, Lianglu. zuoling managed the basic organizational structure within the banner, while Protector-General belonged to the Protector-General system. "Acting" indicates the status of appointment at the time, not necessarily a formal appointment.
The Yunqiwei rank was a hereditary position, and its succession differed from the appointment of Protector-General. Mandai's retirement due to old age cannot be written as death in battle, and Lianglu's succession did not automatically mean he assumed the position of Acting Protector-General. The descendants fought in Yunnan, while the original genealogy records their ancestral home as Ningguta; these two must be clearly stated separately. This record provides clues to the family's subsequent military achievements and inheritance, rather than Weng Jiada's personal military record. The date of surrender, the procedures for appointment, the time of the Yunnan campaign, and the lineage are yet to be verified.
