Overview
Zhuo Henuo was a member of the Taichulu clan, listed in Volume 43 of the Qing Dynasty's official genealogy, *The Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*. He belonged to the Plain Blue Banner and his family had lived in Hunchun for generations before surrendering to the Qing Dynasty at the beginning of the dynasty. The electronic text titled "Taichulu Clan" indicates his surname. He initially served as a non-official, but during the attack on Nangong County, he was the first to scale the city walls without using siege ladders, earning him the title of Yunqiwei . During the conquest of the Central Plains, he participated in battles around Shanhaiguan, earning the title of Qiduwei , and later, through imperial decree, was promoted to Second-Class Qingche duwei .
"Non-official" was a term of status for Bannermen at the time, not an official position. Yunqiwei, Qiduwei, and Qingche duwei were hereditary ranks for meritorious officials. The original text used these titles to describe military achievements and promotions, and these should not be mechanically equated to modern military ranks.
After Zhuo Henuo's death, his son Jieshi succeeded him, participating in battles at Shimenkan, Huangcaoba, and Guihuasi in Yunnan. He later fought against Galdan at Zhaomodo, accumulating hereditary titles. He died from injuries sustained while on a mission to Tsering Wangbu, and was posthumously awarded the title of Third-Class Baron. His son Zhuonai succeeded him, serving as General of Xi'an before being dismissed. The book records that he was later appointed Deputy Commander-in-Chief. Zhuo Henuo also had a son, Yahuna, who served as a military officer, and a grandson, Zhaoge, who served as a scribe. The military campaigns of the first two generations and the official appointments of the third generation must be described separately. The specific correspondence between Hunchun and present-day Hunchun, the characters of the surnames in the catalog, and the exact years of each appointment are yet to be verified.
