Overview
The Wencheheng clan is a Manchu surname, simplified as Wencheheng. Volume 48 of the official Qing dynasty compilation, *The Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, records their ancestral home as Ula and Yehe, and includes Borji, Uyunzhu, and the supplementary figure Hedong'e. Ula is related to the Songhua River basin in Jilin, while Yehe is associated with the area around present-day Yehe in Siping; these two geographical origins belong to specific branches and cannot be combined into a single village.
The genealogy records Borji as belonging to the Bordered Yellow Banner, residing in Ula, and submitting to the Qing dynasty at its beginning. His son, Esen, was awarded the title of Yunqiwei for his military achievements during the conquest of China, and later received further promotions. Uyunzhu, also belonging to the Bordered Yellow Banner, resided in Yehe and also submitted to the Qing dynasty at its beginning; his grandson, Changshou, received the title of Te'enqiduwei for his careful service to the Yongzheng Emperor. Hedong'e came from Yehe, and his submission was clearly dated to the Tiancong period; his descendants held positions such as Langzhong, Yuanwailang, Zuoling, and Bitieshi. These materials demonstrate that different branches of the same surname could have different times of submission and different reasons for being granted official positions. The titles of Qiduwei and Yunqiwei were hereditary ranks of merit, while Langzhong and Zuoling were actual official positions; one cannot consider a single position as a shared identity for the entire surname. The Manchu spelling, etymology, and verifiable common ancestors among the various branches of this surname still need to be verified.
