Overview
Wadassun is a figure listed in Volume 53 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, under the He Yi clan. He belonged to the Plain Yellow Banner, and his family had lived in Jinzhou for generations. He was of the same clan as Wuling'e, but the year of his submission is unknown. He himself served as a Xiaoqi Xiao (a military officer), and his son, Naertai, also served as Xiaoqi Xiao. The original text does not list specific battles or the hereditary succession of the position.
The Xiaoqi Xiao was a low-ranking officer in the Eight Banners' Xiaoqi organization, involved in the management and training of the troops under his command. It was at a different management level than officers such as zuoling, Can Ling, and Du Tong, and the number of troops under one's command cannot be inferred solely from the title "Xiaoqi." The fact that father and son held the same title indicates that both generations participated in the management of the banner troops, but it is not sufficient to prove that the same position was hereditarily passed down from father to son.
The He Yi clan is listed as a Manchu surname in the original text, and the clan general description mentions places like Shulehe. Wadassun's branch is specifically listed as Jinzhou. Jinzhou was the ancestral home, not proof of the father and son's military service; the Plain Yellow Banner was not equivalent to the place of residence. The original text uses "former post" to indicate past office and cannot be used alone to calculate retirement or death date. The Ningguta migration and appointment to the hereditary merit rank of Qiduwei by other members of the clan should not be added to this entry; their specific ancestral home and military post terms still need to be verified.
