Overview
The Cangmarji clan is a Manchu surname recorded in Volume 58 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, an official compilation from the Qianlong reign. They were originally from Heilongjiang and Bixin. The branch of Alu from the Plain Yellow Banner originated in Heilongjiang and submitted to the Qing dynasty at the beginning of the dynasty; his great-grandson, Sadai, served as a military officer. The branch of Enehe from the Bordered Yellow Banner originated in Bixin; he himself served as a zuoling (a military rank), but the year of his submission is unknown. Information regarding the banner affiliation, region, and date of submission for both branches should be preserved separately.
A military officer was a low-ranking military officer within the military system, managing their assigned troops and participating in guard duty and military campaigns. A zuoling was both a basic banner rank and the official title for managing that rank. Sadai was Alu's great-grandson, while Enehe himself served as a zuoling; their shared surname should not be used to rewrite their respective positions as a common ancestor's resume.
The Plain Yellow Banner and the Bordered Yellow Banner were two different banners; sharing the same surname does not equate to sharing the same rank. Heilongjiang is the historical ancestral homeland in the genealogy, while Bixin is another place name; the original text does not state that the surname originated from Bixin, nor does it give the order of migration of the two branches. The modern correspondence of Bixin, the organizational structure of the Eniehezuo, and the Manchu genealogy of each branch still need to be verified. For the time being, we will not locate it according to the similar-sounding place name or supplement the common migration route of the entire clan.
