Overview
The Macha clan is a Manchu surname recorded in Volume 58 of the official genealogy of the Manchu clans of the Eight Banners, compiled during the Qianlong reign. Their ancestral home was in Sain and Solon. The Hushika clan of the Bordered Blue Banner resided in Sain, surrendering at the beginning of the dynasty; their son, Boerjin, served as a defense officer, and their grandson, Murtai, served as a zuoling (military officer). The Hulardai clan of the Plain White Banner resided in Solon, serving as a third-class imperial bodyguard, and surrendered during the Tiancong reign. The ancestral home, banner affiliation, stage of surrender, and generations recorded for these two branches differ.
Defense officer was a military officer of the Eight Banners. zuoling refers to both the basic organizational unit and the official managing that unit, involving banner soldiers, training, and military and political affairs. A third-class imperial bodyguard belonged to the emperor's guard and escort system and cannot be considered a Mongol or imperial clan title; Murtai's zuoling position did not belong to the Hushika clan itself.
Tiancong was the reign title of Huang Taiji during the Later Jin period, indicating the time frame of Hulardai's surrender, but the original text does not specify a particular year. The term "Solon" here refers to the ancestral homeland. We cannot simply change the classification of the surname entry based on this word alone, nor can we infer that the two branches share the same language or migration route. The exact location of Sain, the specific residence of the Solons, the Manchu surnames of the two branches, and kinship connections still need to be verified. We cannot directly locate them based on modern places with the same name.
