Overview
The Geerke clan is a Manchu surname listed in Volume 59 of the official genealogy of the Manchu clans of the Eight Banners, compiled during the Qianlong reign. Their ancestral home was Gerqin. When Yong'atai of the Plain Yellow Banner initially submitted to the Qing dynasty, his grandsons Butut and Erqitai served as Xiaoqixiao (military cavalry officers), and his great-grandson E'yue served as Xieling (assistant commander). These official positions were held by two grandsons and one great-grandson, respectively, and cannot be attributed to Yong'atai himself holding these positions sequentially.
Xiaoqixiao were low-ranking military officers in the Eight Banners, involved in training and disciplining their troops. Xieling were military administrators, responsible for commanding relevant troops in garrison and other organizational structures. These two titles indicate the rank and organizational division of the descendants. However, the original text does not specify E'yue's exact garrison location, so it's impossible to arbitrarily add "Xieling of a certain city."
Geerke is the clan name, and Gerqin is the ancestral home name. Even if the pronunciations are similar, there is insufficient evidence to suggest that the surname originated from that place. The Plain Yellow Banner was part of the Eight Banners' organizational structure, and "early Qing dynasty" is a general term for the period of submission, not a specific year. The genealogy does not directly list the brotherly relationships or a complete father-son chain. Butut and Erqitai are both referred to as grandsons of Yong'atai, so a common father cannot be found based on this. The place of origin, Manchu surname, and the tenure of each person still need to be verified.
