Overview
The Bala clan is a Manchu surname recorded in Volume 59 of the official genealogy of the Manchu clans of the Eight Banners, compiled during the Qianlong reign. They were originally from the Liao River region. A representative figure, Buyantu, belonged to the Bordered Yellow Banner and surrendered during the Tiancong reign, serving as a First-Class Imperial Guard and concurrently a zuoling (military officer). The term "concurrently" clearly indicates a simultaneous appointment as recorded in the original text and should not be separated into two unverified periods of promotion.
The First-Class Imperial Guard served in the emperor's bodyguard system, while the zuoling was an official managing the basic organization of the Eight Banners, involved in banner soldiers, training, and military and political affairs. One person holding both positions indicates that both responsibilities fell to the same individual; it does not mean that Imperial Guard and zuoling were synonymous titles, nor does it imply that zuoling was necessarily a hereditary position.
Tiancong was the reign title used by Huang Taiji during the Later Jin period, from 1627 to 1636, providing the historical context for Buyantu's surrender. The Liao River is the ancestral home recorded in the genealogy; the broad name of the river should not be used to pinpoint a specific village or birthplace along its banks. This entry records Buyantu from the Balla clan. Buyantu in other volumes must be identified along with their surname, banner affiliation, and region. Specific zuoling (military command) numbers, dates of concurrent appointments, Manchu surnames, and information about their descendants still need to be verified.
