Overview
The Bohe Luo clan is a Manchu surname recorded in Volume 61 of the official genealogy of the Eight Banners Manchu clans compiled during the Qianlong reign. They resided in Sahalu. Baotai submitted to the Qing dynasty during the Tiancong era. The genealogy records them as belonging to the Bordered White Banner, noting a change of affiliation from the Bordered Yellow Banner. His great-grandson, Maitu, served as a city gate officer. This information simultaneously includes early submission, subsequent banner changes, and the appointment of descendants to official positions; it cannot be presented as a single event in the same year.
The position of city gate officer was a military post related to city gate guarding and military service management. It should be understood in conjunction with the specific city and military system. The original text does not specify which city Maitu guarded, nor should it be filled in by the establishment of an official with the same name in a particular city. This position clearly belonged to Baotai's great-grandson and cannot be considered Baotai's own official title.
Tiancong was the reign title of Huang Taiji during the Later Jin period, belonging to the pre-Qing conquest phase. The year of the change of affiliation is not recorded, so it cannot be simply stated that Baotai had already changed from the Bordered Yellow Banner to the Bordered White Banner in the year of his submission. Sahalu is the ancestral home name here, and the surname Boheluo cannot be explained by pronunciation alone or by merging similar-sounding clans. The specific village location, Manchu surnames, reorganization into a new administrative unit, and the term of office of Maitu still need to be verified. The genealogy does not record military achievements, hereditary positions, or a complete lineage.
