Overview
The Harji clan is a Manchu surname listed in Volume 61 of the official genealogy of the Manchu clans of the Eight Banners, compiled during the Qianlong reign. They originally resided in Hada. Hakesan, a bondservant of the Bordered White Banner, submitted to the Qing dynasty at the beginning of the dynasty. His great-grandson, Jintai, was appointed a sixth-rank bondservant (Baoyi Da) in the genealogical records. However, the specific position here belongs to his descendant Jintai and cannot be written as Hakesan himself holding the position of sixth-rank bondservant (Baoyi Da).
bondservant (Baoyi) was a specific status and organizational category within the Eight Banners, not a modern ordinary employment profession. A bondservant (Baoyi Da) managed the corresponding bondservant staff and affairs. The "sixth rank" recorded in the original text refers to the individual's rank and should be recorded and preserved. However, the official titles and ranks differed across organizations and eras, and one cannot simply change one rank from another system table.
Hada is the ancestral home, the Bordered White Banner is the banner affiliation, and Harji is the clan classification. These three provide clues for identification but do not directly indicate Hakesan's specific village or birth and death dates. Yuansun is a descendant in the genealogy, but the original text does not list the father-son relationship generation by generation. Jin Tai's position does not mean that every generation of the clan served as a bondservant. The specific administrative divisions, Manchu surnames, Jin Tai's term of office, and the exact year of his submission still need to be verified by the original printed edition and archives.
