Overview
Wang Chengzhao was a member of the Bordered White Banner's bondservant administration during the Qing Dynasty. The Wang family had long resided in Tieling, but the exact year of their arrival is unknown. Volume 77 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners* records that his great-grandson, Wang Guobi, served as a Reader-in-Waiting in the Grand Secretariat, and Wang Guoqing served as a county magistrate; Wang Chengzhao himself is not listed as an official. The Grand Secretariat officials and local county officials belonged to two different descendants and cannot be combined into one ancestor's resume.
The Grand Secretariat was a crucial central agency handling imperial edicts and official documents. The Reader-in-Waiting in the Grand Secretariat was responsible for proofreading and collating relevant documents. The title "Reader" did not imply that the official was a Grand Secretary; this position must be distinguished from the Reader-in-Waiting in the Hanlin Academy. During the Qing Dynasty, different departments within the Grand Secretariat handled Manchu, Han, and Mongolian languages, with different personnel responsible for official documents, petitions, and imperial edicts.
The county magistrate was an assistant official in the county government, assisting in local governance. His responsibilities included matters such as grain and horse supplies, taxes, household registration, and arrests; the specific division of labor varied depending on the organization. The name of the county where Wang Guoqing served is not recorded, so his location or achievements cannot be determined. The family's bondservants and their subordinates indicate organizational affiliation; the two positions held by his descendants indicate different service levels, and each must be described according to their own information.
