Name and documentary identification

The Yidian Jurchens, also described as the Yidian Jurchen division (*Yidian Nüzhi bu*), appear in the *History of Liao* (*Liaoshi*), “Treatise on Camps and Guards,” juan 33. The historical graph *nüzhi* is a common variant used for the Jurchens. The term names a particular group administered within the Liao political system, not the entire Jurchen population and certainly not the later Manchu Eight Banners.

The record states that the unit was established from Jurchen households during the reign of Emperor Shengzong of Liao. It belonged to the Southern Administration (*Nanfu*) and was situated north of the place called Gaozhou. Three elements are therefore documented: its Jurchen household basis, its administrative subordination, and a relative geographical location. The text does not supply boundaries from which a precise modern administrative map could safely be drawn.

Comparison with other groups

The same juan mentions other named Jurchen divisions, including the Aoyan Jurchens, whose administrative placement was not necessarily identical. Research must distinguish specific units, Liao military-administrative organization, and broad ethnic terminology. The cited Yidian record does not establish a list of leaders, exact household numbers, or the group's later migration history. Similar-sounding names in other sources cannot justify assigning unrelated Jurchen events or lineages to the Yidian unit.
