Background and Banner Affiliation
Gantakan was a Guwalgiya member of the Plain White Banner whose ancestral locality was Hurha. Volume 4 of the Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners records his early submission and service as a guard colonel. He was killed during operations at Cao County in Shandong and received the posthumous hereditary distinction yunqiwei. His son Gaisihai inherited the rank and later earned promotion to qidu wei through fighting in the campaign against Zhoushan in Zhejiang.
Career, Campaigns, and Offices
A guard colonel managed guards and military training within a specific banner formation. Yunqiwei and qidu wei, in contrast, were hereditary distinctions for service and were not identical active guard commands. Gantakan's death preceded the later military record of his son.
Hereditary Honors and Source Limits
Gaisihai was subsequently killed during the assault on Yongxing County and was posthumously granted an additional yunqiwei. He had no descendants, so the accumulated hereditary distinction passed through his younger brother's sons Fuhai and Na'ersai and later descendants, including Nayinbao. Other sons of Gantakan pursued separate careers: Ga'ertai became vice-minister of the Board of Punishments, while A'ersai served as a third-class imperial bodyguard. These legal-administrative and palace-service offices should not be conflated with Gantakan's battlefield command. The site of the Yongxing battle and exact collateral inheritance chain await closer examination. Source: Eight Banners Manchu Clan Genealogy, vol. 4.
