Overview
Tuna, mentioned in Volume 55 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, is the grandson of Hushitun of the Hong'e clan and served as Minister of Works. This branch belonged to the Bordered White Banner, and the family had lived in Hada for generations, initially submitting to the Qing dynasty. The original text does not provide information on Tuna's birth and death dates, the year he took office, or specific engineering projects.
The Ministry of Works was one of the Six Ministries of the Qing dynasty, handling construction, machinery manufacturing, and related engineering affairs. The Minister was the highest-ranking official, assisted by the Vice Minister, and subordinate officials such as Directors, Assistant Directors, and Clerks handled various tasks. The Ministry of Works' responsibilities indicate the administrative nature of Tuna's position; therefore, it cannot be concluded that all palace, city wall, or water conservancy projects of the same period were his personal projects.
Other members of the family, Ahanikan and Edebei, served as Directors and concurrently as Captains, but the original text does not specify their respective offices or indicate they were subordinates of Tuna. Hong'e was a Manchu clan derived from a mountain name, and Hada was their ancestral home. The Eight Banners system and positions within the central government were at different levels. Tuna's experience as a minister must be separated from that of his grandfather, a military officer. Those with the same name must also be distinguished by family and banner affiliation. The start and end dates of his resume and specific political affairs should continue to be examined through archives, and general institutional background should not be used to replace personal facts.
