Overview
The Ulhuji clan is a Manchu surname listed in Volume 58 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of the Eight Banners Manchu Clans*, an official compilation from the Qianlong reign. They resided in the Songhua River region and the Ussuri region. The Gusike clan of the Plain Yellow Banner originally lived in the Songhua River region, surrendering to the Qing dynasty at the beginning of the dynasty. Their son, Wohe, served as a deputy commander; their grandson, Gunse, served as a garrison commander; and their great-great-grandson, Bajintai, also served as a garrison commander. The Sangge clan of the Plain Blue Banner originally lived in the Ussuri region, with no known year of surrender. Their son, Zhuertai, served as a guard captain; Liufushou served as a cavalry captain; and their grandson, Huase, served as a garrison commander.
The two clans differ in their banner affiliation, ancestral home, and surrender information. The early surrender of the Gusike clan cannot be directly attributed to the Sangge clan. The Songhua River and Ussuri regions provide clues about their historical residence; the surname itself is a clan classification in the genealogy, and its etymology or a modern village should not be inferred solely from the name.
Deputy commander, garrison commander, cavalry captain, and guard captain are all military positions, but they differ in organizational hierarchy and affiliation. The Guard School commanded its subordinate guards, while the Cavalry School participated in the management of grassroots banner soldiers. The former should not be viewed literally as merely personal bodyguards and the latter as simply horse riding instructors. The electronic version has missing characters in its general description; the place of residence, Usuli, can be confirmed through the biographical entries. However, the original characters in the general description, specific appointments, kinship relationships, and Manchu surnames still require verification through the original engraving and biographical records.
