Overview
Gu Xing was a member of the Plain Yellow Banner's bondservant administration during the Qing Dynasty. His family had lived in Liaoyang for generations, but the year of their submission is unknown. Volume 77 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners* records the official positions of his descendants under the entry for the "Gu Family," but does not specify Gu Xing's own official title. Reading this material requires assigning each generation's position to a specific name.
The original text records that his son, Gu Hai, served as a Qiduwei; Gu Ning served as a shepherd; his great-great-grandsons, Gu Bose and Sangge, both served as shepherds; his fourth-generation descendant, Chu Baoshan, also served as a shepherd; and Chaqi is recorded as an inner deputy administrator. Shepherds managed related pastoral affairs, cavalry captains were banner officers, and inner deputy administrators were involved in the management of the bondservant system within the palace. Even if multiple members of the same family served as shepherds, it does not necessarily prove that these positions were hereditary or always belonged to the same institution.
The entry for Gu Xing is particularly suitable for demonstrating how officially compiled clan genealogies can list different positions across several generations in a very short record. The book does not specify the official post Gu Xing held, nor does it fully list all the kinship ties between his great-great-grandson and fourth-generation descendant. When conducting research, it is essential to retain generational markers such as "his son," "great-great-grandson," and "fourth-generation descendant," and not to compress these figures into a narrative of Gu Xing's continuous personal promotions.
