Overview
Du Yan is a figure under the jurisdiction of the Bordered Blue Banner's bondservants in Volume 77 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*. He was a native of Shenyang and submitted to the Qing dynasty during the Tiancong era. Tiancong was the reign title of the Later Jin dynasty under Huang Taiji, used from 1627 to 1636 before the change of reign title, providing a timeframe for his submission before entering the Central Plains. The genealogy records that his son, Longgui, served as a zuoling (a military officer), and his grandson, Bayan'a, served as an eighth-rank official; however, Du Yan himself is not listed as an official.
The term "zuoling" can refer to both the basic organizational unit of the Eight Banners and the official in charge of that unit. The former zuoling mentioned in this entry is clearly an official title, involving the management of banner members, households, and salaries. The specific zuoling and term of office require further verification. "Subordinate under the jurisdiction" refers to Du Yan's official status and should not be confused with his son's zuoling position.
The eighth-rank official only indicates Bayan'a's rank. In the Qing dynasty, ranks were divided into principal and subordinate ranks; the original text does not specify whether it was a principal or subordinate eighth rank, nor does it list specific duties; one could not arbitrarily fill common positions such as scribe. Shenyang is the ancestral home of the family. The positions held by the two generations of descendants are not specified in this entry. The boundaries of this information should be preserved regarding the personal experiences of the individuals.
