Overview

Manse was a member of the Plain White Banner under the jurisdiction of the Qing Dynasty's bondservants. His family had lived in the Changbai Mountains region for generations, and the year of their submission is unknown. Volume 77 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, compiled during the Qianlong reign, records his own and his descendants' official positions under the relevant surname entry. This information differs from many genealogies that only record the positions of descendants, explicitly stating that Manse himself had served as a Yuanwailang (a minor official).

The original book also records that his son, Laizhu, had also served as a Yuanwailang, and his grandsons, Haiwang and Huashan, had both served as Bitieshi (a minor official), and his great-grandson, Liushiyi, had served as Bitieshi. Yuanwailang was a government official position, while Bitieshi involved document processing. The fact that both father and son have records of serving as Yuanwailang does not necessarily mean they held the same position, nor does it imply that the position was hereditary; the three Bitieshis are not specified to have served in the same government agency.

"Living in the Changbai Mountains region" indicates the general area of the family's former residence, not a specific village or town address. The appearance of "Liushiyi" in the great-grandson's name is a name recorded in the genealogy, not his age at the time. The original entry did not provide information about the government office, term of office, resume, and achievements of Manse, who served as an assistant director. Therefore, the encyclopedia should separate the accurate facts about the person from the background of the official system to avoid exaggerating this brief information.
