Overview

The Ya family is recorded in Volume 79 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners* under the name of Ya Shangren, listed as a Tainikan surname within the Manchu banner system. Ya Shangren belonged to the Plain Yellow Banner, residing in Jilin Ula for generations, and submitted to the Qing dynasty during the Tiancong era. His great-grandson, Chongshun, served as an infantry officer; his great-great-grandson, Baoping, served as a first-class imperial bodyguard and a guard captain during the compilation of the genealogy; and Baozai served as a secretary in the Central Secretariat. Baoping and Baozai are listed separately; these two positions cannot be considered as one person's experience.

The Tiancong era was the reign title used by Huang Taiji from 1627 to 1636, meaning the family's submission occurred before the Qing dynasty entered the Central Plains. Jilin Ula is the name of their ancestral home, related to the Songhua River basin in present-day Jilin Province; its historical scope changed over time and cannot be limited to a single modern village.

An infantry officer was responsible for leading the basic infantry and patrolling; a first-class imperial bodyguard was a rank within the guards, while a guard captain was involved in the management of guard ranks; the same person could hold both ranks and administrative positions. The Zhongshu (ZhongShu) was an official position responsible for handling written documents; its specific affiliation within that institution requires further investigation. The original genealogy does not specify the official title of the person named Yashangren, but the positions of his ancestors, great-grandsons, and great-great-grandsons are preserved separately. Details of the ancestral home, the terms of service of the guards, and the original inscribed names are pending verification.
