Overview

The You family is listed in Volume 79 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, under the category of Tainikan surnames within the Manchu banners, with Xuanzhu's family as an example. Xuanzhu belonged to the Bordered White Banner, residing in Zhanhe, but the year of his submission is unknown. His son, Wuse, served as a Xiaoqixiao (NiaoQiXiao), and his grandson, Artu, served as a third-class bodyguard. Although Xuanzhu and Wuse did not explicitly place the You surname before their names, this family should still be identified by referring to the original title of the You family section in the book.

A Xiaoqixiao was an officer in the basic military organization of the Eight Banners, involved in leading and training the soldiers under their command. A third-class bodyguard belonged to the bodyguard system of princely residences, undertaking tasks such as accompanying the prince, and was different from the imperial bodyguard organization. "Third-class" indicates the internal rank of the bodyguard and cannot be directly written as the third rank of a Qing dynasty official.

The Bordered White Banner refers to the family's banner affiliation, and Zhanhe is the name of their ancestral home; neither of these corresponds to the specific princely residence where Artu served. This section provides different information about three generations of the father and son: Xuanzhu's identity and ancestral home, Wuse's military rank, and Artu's position as a guard, which cannot all be attributed to the ancestors. The specific location of Zhanhe, the affiliation of the royal palace, and the appointments are pending verification; this article retains the original genealogy's surname titles and personal name relationships, and does not change Wuse's surname because it shares a character with another surname.
