Origins and family record

Guoerhun was an Irgen Gioro clansman of the Plain White Banner, from a family associated with Jakumu that entered the Manchu polity in its formative period. Volume 15 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of the Eight Banner Manchu Clans* records no individual appointment for Guoerhun. It identifies instead several positions held by descendants from different generations.

Military and clerical appointments

His son Duohai formerly served as a *qianfengxiao*, an officer of the Banner Vanguard, whose functions could include forward screening and reconnaissance as well as combat tasks. His grandson Erdu formerly served as a *xiaoqixiao*, concerned with the organization of ordinary Banner soldiers. The two posts should not be reduced to generic labels such as “vanguard soldier” and “cavalryman,” since they were named offices within military establishments.

A more distant descendant, Moerhun, formerly served as a *bitieshi*, a clerical officer concerned with written documentation, copying and translation. In Manchu administrative vocabulary, *bithesi* referred to a secretary or clerk and was related to terms for writing and documents. This linguistic background helps explain the title but does not identify Moerhun's particular employing institution or the languages and works on which he personally laboured.

Boundaries of historical reconstruction

The ancestor should not be described as holding the three offices in succession. Nor does the generational list supply every intervening father, dates of service or a hereditary succession in military posts. The exact historical site of Jakumu, allegiance year and original forms of the names remain to be established through the official genealogy, local histories and administrative registers.
