Overview
Chekemu is a figure recorded in Volume 58 of the *Comprehensive Genealogy of Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners*, under the section on the Jipuchu clan. He belonged to the Plain Yellow Banner and resided in Yehe. The original text categorizes him as one of those who submitted to the Qing dynasty in its early years. The Jipuchu clan is a clan classification title in the original text; clan names cannot be arbitrarily added before an individual's name. Furthermore, the original text does not record Chekemu's personal official positions, and one should not infer his own official rank simply because many of his descendants held official posts.
Family positions are detailed starting from the great-grandson generation: great-grandson Suwanzhu served as a zuoling (military officer); great-great-grandson Fomin served as a Zhongshu (secretary); Fohai served as a Chengshouwei (city garrison commander); and Saodase served as a Qianfengxiao (vanguard officer) when the genealogy was compiled; fourth-generation descendant Yaqi served as a Sandeng Shiwei (third-class imperial bodyguard); Sete served as a Bitieshi (scribe); and Sechao served as a Zhifu (prefect) when the genealogy was compiled. These official positions involved banner management, city defense, imperial guards, clerical work, and local administration, demonstrating the wide range of positions held by members of this family.
"Yehe" is a clue to their ancestral home that can be directly confirmed from historical records, but this alone cannot reconstruct the family's migration route. The term "current" in the original text must be understood within the temporal context of official genealogies compiled during the Qianlong era, and does not imply that all descendants simultaneously or for extended periods held the aforementioned positions. The focus of this entry is on clearly distinguishing the positions held by different generations of the family, rather than compiling an account of Chekemu's personal experiences that lack supporting documentation.
