Overview

Volume 58 of the Qing Dynasty's *Comprehensive Genealogy of the Manchu Clans of the Eight Banners* preserves clues about Eshi's banner affiliation and the official positions of his relatives. At this stage, the explicit content of the genealogy text serves as the boundary of fact. The genealogy places Eshi under the heading "Eshi of the Eshi Clan"; here, Eshi remains the main entry, and the surname heading only indicates the family arrangement in the genealogy and cannot replace the individual's name. According to the original entry, Eshi was a member of the Bordered Yellow Banner and resided in Hurha. "Guide Zhangjing" was a title related to military guidance and route reconnaissance; the original entry only records the position and cannot be used to fabricate participation in a battle. The genealogy text subsequently preserves the following chain of relatives and positions: formerly a Guide Zhangjing; his grandson Aiha, formerly a head of the household. The original entry only states "Bordered Yellow Banner person," without mentioning bondservants or Han soldiers. "Hurha place" preserves important clues about the ancestral home, but currently lacks sufficient place name evidence to confirm its modern location; the original name should be maintained and marked as pending further investigation.
